Women in Construction Week is the first full week in March. Currently, only 13% of employees in the construction industry are female, according to Construction Coverage. By highlighting women involved in the trade, we hope to increase the number of women in construction and the growing role they play in the industry.
Stephanie Nix-Thomas is the President and CEO of Claude H. Nix Construction, a family business and valued customer of Beehive Insurance. It was started by her parents in 1974. In a field traditionally dominated by men, Stephanie’s a trailblazer for women.
“I’ve always been in the construction and engineering fields,” Stephanie said. “I have a civil engineering background and previously did work with a consulting engineering firm and state government.”
That all changed in 2002 when Stephanie and her brother Jon officially purchased the company from their parents. The pair has been running the business ever since.
“This is our 50th year in operation, so I’ve grown up around it,” Stephanie said. “Our company believes in the principles of ‘you’re only as good as your word’ and ‘do it right the first time.’ It’s been a great ride. This industry is almost like a second home to me.”
Stephanie’s work hasn’t always come easy to her. She faced many challenges and learning curves early on with the company.
“My first role was as a project manager,” Stephanie said. “I often had my work cut out for me connecting with the guys in the field. Now, things have changed and there are more women out there. So, it’s not as challenging to be a woman in construction. Everyone’s getting used to the change.”
It’s a change for the better. Stephanie believes it’s opening up doors for opportunities for women to go after whatever role they want.
“I just don’t think women should think they’re limited,” Stephanie said. “If they’re interested in being a welder, a project manager, or equipment operator, they should go after it. We’ve had some great women in the field and in our office. A lot of doors are opening up these days, and we definitely need more people in construction.”
Whether it’s someone just getting started in the industry or a more seasoned pro, Stephanie has found the most success in life by surrounding herself with those that make her better.
“I think one of the most important business things that you can do is to build your team, and that doesn’t necessarily mean your internal team,” Stephanie said. “Beehive Insurance has been a great team member for Nix Construction over the past few years. I appreciate team members like that. Looking for opportunities to partner with those that help you build your business or your career is the best advice I can give to anyone.”
